NEW ORLEANS—Eric Rowe, who started every game at safety as a true freshman this season, has been named to the 2011 Freshman All-America Team by the Football Writers Association of America. Rowe becomes the second Ute ever named to the team along with former Ute defensive back Eric Weddle in 2003. Weddle is now an all-pro safety with the Chargers.
Rowe finished with 69 tackles, nine pass breakups and an interception, helping Utah to a first-place Pac-12 rank in pass efficiency defense. He also had 2.5 tackles for loss, including a sack, for the Sun Bowl champion Utes.
Both redshirt freshmen and true freshmen are considered for the team and Rowe was one of 14 true freshmen named by a panel of 11 nationally-prominent sportswriters.
