Podcast: Drew Hansen, former Runnin' Utes star [part 1 of 3]
"I ended up about 3/4ths of the way through my senior year stepping back from the line by about 3 or 4 inches. The reason I did this was Coach Judkins had noticed in a couple of critical situations that I'd miss free throws long, and that turned out to be a big help, because in the Carolina game I ended up getting fouled with about 50 seconds left. I ended up implementing this approach that Judkins suggested and fortunately knocked those down."

Spring Ball - Day 1 thoughts and observations
Going into day one of spring practice the very first thing I noticed walking in the indoor practice facility was Coach Tim Davis coaching up the line. Telling them to stay low and teaching them a down hill blocking technique, which will be a very welcome site for Ute fans.
Also of note to Ute fans should be Jordan Wynn and his constant interaction with new Offensive Coordinator Norm Chow. Wynn was a presence around Coach Chow trying to pick up nuances of this new offense. And the statement by Coach Chow, Whit, and Davis of Jordan Wynn being #1 on the depth chart was true to form on day one. Whenever the offensive ones were on the field, Wynn was generally under center, unless it was a passing play.
That leads me into another interesting, but not surprising observation. 90%+ of offensive snaps were indeed taken under center, a change of pace for this Utah offense, a change that Jordan Wynn says he loves and that it is more like the system he ran in high school. However, there was still the four wideout sets which we have come to know at Utah, there was just more two back sets.
Sticking to the offensive side of the ball, I don't know how much can be read into it, but, Luke Mathews was taking first team snaps a majority of the time at tail back. I take this with a grain of salt with it being the first day and all, but it was interesting to me. Harvey Langi and John White seemed to get the majority of 2nd and 3rd team snaps. Langi is a big bruiser but also very agile. John White is a guy that got me excited on the first day, hiding behind blockers as well as his explosive ability. The kid can flat out hit the hole and be gone. The comparisons he has received to former Oregon State back Jacquizz Rogers is very fitting. And according to this ESPN.com article White was a big get for the U.
As for the wideouts nothing shocking, DeVonte and Reggie Dunn were the X and Y receivers. Mo Lee got a lot of run but had a bit of a tough day after dropping a number of balls. Highly recruited Kenneth Scott appears to just be out of the starting rotation, I'm interested to see if he moves up as spring balls moves on.
Of note Dexter Ransom was in the pit. And as for new QB Tyler Shreve - the kid has a cannon. Every ball he throws has zip and is a spiral. If the kid knows how to read defenses and make proper decisions he'll give Wynn a run for his money, Robles was ok today I thought. He missed a lot of throws, Shreve was the one that caught the eye today.
As for the D - the new look secondary on day one was as follows - Ryan Lacy and Conroy Black at corner. Damien Paine and Chappuis (I was shocked at this one) at safety. Linebackers were Martinez, Walker, and Brian Blechen - no big surprises here. JJ Williams was walking around the indoor in a walking boot. Looks like he has a ways to go still from seeing the field. It was nice to see some leadership early on in practice with the likes of Chaz Walker teaching redshirt freshman VJ Fehoko what reads he needed to make on a particular play.
All-in-all a good first day. Lots of balls being dropped and fumbled, which is to be expected on the first day of spring practice. But how great it feels to have football back.
